Classroom Management

The goal of our co-op is the education of our kids which requires a positive classroom environment. Sometimes students will exhibit behaviors that disrupt the class and part of our goal is to help students understand how to function in a classroom setting since it’s a life skill that comes up quite a bit as an adult.

We have a four step escalation process for students who may be struggling with this:

  1. Verbal warning for disruptive behavior, student completes Step 1 worksheet.
  2. Written warning for disruptive behavior, this will be sent to the parent, the student will write a statement about what they’re going to do differently. Student completes Step 2 worksheet at co-op and Step 3 worksheet with a parent.
  3. The student will need to stay with their parent or assigned adult for the day.  Review Step 3 worksheet and modify as needed.
  4. The student will be suspended from co-op for one week.
  5. Meeting with all involved parties to discuss whether the co-op setting is a good fit.

Disruptive behavior doesn’t have to be objectively bad – it’s simply any behavior that distracts other students or the teacher from the class content. What is considered disruptive behavior is ultimately decided by the teachers and aides in the class.

Our goal with teaching classroom skills is not to be punitive, but to support a positive learning environment for all of our students and to teach skills that equip students for real world settings.

Curriculum

One of our values at Grace is working smarter and not harder, so one of the things we’re working on is developing open and go curriculum for the classes we offer. Teachers are not required to use the provided lesson plans but using them is encouraged and we hope they serve as a valuable resource to make your life easier!
